"Like most lifestyle choices, vacation travel has been viewed primarily as a
matter of personal preference and financial means. "If you want it and can
afford it - do it" has been the prevailing mindset. Given the ecological
problems threatening the planet, this sort of self-indulgent willfullness,
particularly on the part of "first world" travelers, is no longer appropriate.
We must bring the same level of critical reflection to our choice of travel
destinations as we do to the decision to drink coffee, drive a car or have
children."
