8. Mountain Bike championship (12/10/99)
The III Latin American Mountain Bike Championship will take place 30-31
October in Jarabacoa. Rancho Baiguate, a promoter of eco sports and
adventure travel, is one of the leading sponsors. Competitors from
Argentina, Antigua, Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa
Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru,
Puerti Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela have registered. Organizer Victor
Manuel Gonzalez said there will be downhill and cross country events.

Reforestation:
Getting the whole nation involved in reforestation,Vice President Jaime
David Fernández Mirabal had the staff of the National Palace planting
trees in Loma La Yagua over the,weekend as their contribution to the
Quisqueya Verde reforestation project. So far 20,000 people have planted
over one,million trees. This is in addition to the 18 million trees
planted by professional planters also part of the Quisqueya Verde
effort,head by the Vice President himself. ,Speaking at the start of the
activity, Vice President Fernández, who at the time was acting President
since President Fernández,was away, said that it has been a difficult
project, but it has met with the support of all they have approached.
"This means that,President Leonel Fernández’s call that every man or
woman, every boy or girl assume their responsibility for the rebirth of
the,DR, so that Quisqueya [indian name for the island], may be green and
green forever, has been met," said the Vice President.,He explained that
the plan calls for getting government institutions, schools and
companies involved in reforesting. ,He urged that the plan continue
regardless of who is in power, highlighting the importance of
conservation of the environment,and rational use of natural resources
for national development.

El Parque comprende una extensión de 1,800.000 hectáreas, donde habitan
más de 1000 especies de aves de las selvas
tropicales americanas. Desciende desde los 5,000 metros hasta los 250
metros, con glaciares, lagunas alto andinas, punas,
yungas, bosques secos y lluviosos amazónicos y pampas con ríos y
lagunas.
* A orillas del Lago Chalalán, en el Río Tuichi, se construye el
Albergue Ecológico Chalalán con la idea de promocionar y
apoyar la conservación de bosques, flora y fauna de la región. Una vez
concluido, el albergue será entregado a la etnia
Quechua Tacana, que habita en la cercana comunidad de San José de
Uchupiamonas y fue parte del proyecto desde su inicio.
Esta comunidad que ha convivido en esos bosques por los últimos 300
años, ha sido capacitada para este nuevo desafío.
* Chalalán se construye respetuosamente, utilizando racionalmente
materiales del propio bosque, aprovechando la energía solar
y protegiendo el lago. Las cabañas están rodeadas de bosque maduro
intacto. Los bosques del alrededor muestran árboles
como el mapajo, los altísimos almendrillos, más de 10 especies de
palmeras, varios bibosis añejos, lianas fornidas, incluso
especies maderables valiosas como la mara, roble y el cedro. El lago
ofrece unos atardeceres inolvidables coreados por el
canto de cientos de aves y el coloridos de varias especies de tucanes y
parabas.
* Las cabañas conservan el estilo tradicional Tacana, paredes
construidas con la corteza de la palmera Chonta y techos de
hojas de Jatata, interiormente recubiertas con esteras y equipadas con
cómodos muebles apropiados para estos ambientes.
