About The Project
Tourism, the world's fastest growing industry, has become the economic mainstay of the Island States of the Caribbean. Because these islands are uniquely circumscribed bio-regions especially sensitive to environmental changes, the challenge of the tourist industry in this region is to not only minimize the adverse ecological effects of indiscriminate use but to augment tourist benefits, expand tourism and investor returns, and encourage community involvement.

A discussion of all of those key issues took place November 29 through December 2, 1995 when Earth Pledge sponsored the Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism which aimed to explore, design and disseminate proposals to implement sustainable tourism that is both practical as well as profitable.

More than 100 individuals representing governmental and non-governmental organizations, foundation directors, and business leaders gathered at the Punta Cana Beach Resort in the Dominican Republic to discuss and resolve issues of environmental sustainability as it relates to tourism in the Caribbean. Among the tangible results was an initiative to establish a Sustainable Development resource Center for the region.
