.............................................................
ABOUT THE CASA DE LOS AMIGOS AND THE SERVICE AND EDUCATION PROJECT.

Casa de los Amigos is a volunteer operated Quaker guest house and service
center located in the heart of Mexico City. Established in 1956, the Casa
is overseen by members of the Mexico City Friends Meeting. We provide
hospitality and an environment of social concern and international
understanding to people from around the world, many of whom are working on
issues of social concern in Latin America. Throughout it's history, the
Casa has maintained a variety of service projects, beginning with several
decades of American Friends Service Committee workcamps in rural Mexico. In
more recent years our efforts have aided Central American refugees,
post-earthquake reconstruction, and an indigenous artisan cooperative,
among other projects.

The Service and Education Project builds upon the Casa's heritage of
service and hospitality, and our identity as international center. This
project offers unique opportunities for uniting foreign volunteers abd
Mexican communities and social service organizations to work and leran
togeter, as they confront the social relaities of Mexico City. The project
is designed to draw the Casa community toward great involvement in issues
of local concern and toward developing partnerships with other
organisations with similar interests and values.

The coordinator must be a person with excellent people skills and a strong
desire to participate in the community of the Casa de los Amigos. Primarily
responsible for organizing activities and maintaining professional
relationships, the Coordinator will rarely be involved in direct service
work of the various community projects. Therefore this person must find
meaning and satisfaction in organising qualtiy service opportunities for
others. In this sense, the Coordinator is truly a servant - both for the
foreign volunteers, and publicly represents the integrity and commitment of
the Casa de los Amigos toward our partnership organizations.

Living and and working in the same environment can be challenging. The Casa
is an intense environment, where productive working relationships demand
both personal flexibility and discipline. Additionally, the Casa maintains
stroct policies on alcohol, drugs, and outdoor smoking areas. Pressures of
living in a different culture and language, and urban congestion and
pollution are other stress factors.

As you consider this opportunity, please reflect upon these comments and
the more detailed descriptions of this project and position.
