Headlines from
THE LATIN AMERICAN TRAVEL ADVISOR
Issue #16, December 1997

WIDESPREAD EFFECTS OF EL NINO
- As predicted, a strong El Nino phenomenon is causing important climatic
changes throughout Latin America. These currently include flooding on the
coast of Ecuador and drought in the Brazilian Amazon.

PUBLIC SAFETY IMPROVES IN EL SALVADOR AND HONDURAS
- Improved security, especially for visitors, has been a welcome change in
both these Central American countries.

DENGUE FEVER ON THE RISE
- The incidence of this mosquito-borne disease has been increasing in both
South and Central America. Colombia and Venezuela are currently reporting
outbreaks.

GOOD TRAVEL VALUE IN MEXICO
- Mexico is presently among those countries offering particularly good value
for the tourist dollar, along with some Andean and Central American nations.

STOCK MARKET JITTERS
- The Asian market crisis of late October continues to send ripples through
some of the economies of Latin America. Brazil and Mexico have been the most
affected, while Chile and Venezuela have best weathered the storm.

FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS
- Recent elections in Honduras and Ecuador have been peaceful, free and fair,
although they are unlikely to bring significant change to either country,
while opposition majorities have been created in legislative elections in
Mexico and Argentina.
