El Planeta Platica: Mountains and Sierra Issue

Mountains offer a cool respite and a place for numerous adventures. Known as
"Sierra" in Spanish, they are regarded as sacred places for the Maya, the Inca
and other indigenous groups throughout Latin America. Unfortunately, the
tourism boards generally promote the beaches and the coastal regions, leaving
tourism and ecotourism in the Sierra basically unknown. This issue focuses on
such travel opportunities and takes a close-up look at mountain-based
conservation efforts.

FYI - I recently wrote an article for Forbes on Mexico's recent national
elections and the internet. This has nothing to do with the environment or
ecotourism, but it's an interesting read at
http://www.forbes.com/tool/html/97/july/sphere0724/power.htm

Upcoming November issue - Local communities and environmental tourism; focus
on indigenous peoples. What is and isn't "public participation"? Are
international groups a help or a hindrance? Does anyone have practical advice?
Articles are now being sought for publication. You can find the Writer's
Guidelines online or email me and I'll send the info asap.

Email problems! There was a system crash in early August. If you sent a message
that I have not replied to, it might have been destroyed before I could read
it. Please resend!
