Just attended the afternoon session of the last day of Internet World 97 in
Mexico City. It was held at the World Trade Center and was organized by Agora
International and Meckelermedia. I found a number of quality sources I will
relay in this message that may be of interest to LATCO readers.

Feel free to forward this to anyone else or any other listserver that is
interested in Mexico and/or internet. Sorry for spelling mistakes - rushing
this off to the list in case anyone wants to check out the sites over the
weekend.

Impressions - this was a small conference, but much better than the one held in
Miami earlier this spring. The exhibitors were mostly the selling links or page
design. Avantel, Telmex and Compuserve were there selling service and hardware.
IBM did the very decent thing and offered a cybercafe where anyone could check
out sites at 20 glass tables set up in the middle of the forum. Very little
focus on content providers, except from:

Mexico en Red
http://www.mexred.net.mx
Internet Access: 199 pesos/month or 1800/year
consulting/revista

Sistema de informacion para la red de desarrollo sustenable en el distrito
federal

Info Latina

Content is the key to attracting and maintaining internet audiences. For all of
the talk of publicity on the net, there's just so little out there that would
merit a return visit.

Web page design and links continue to be very expensive. It's interesting to
note that the monthly rate of unlimited internet access in Mexico City is going
down to less than 200 pesos/month (via Mexico en Red). Other services are
beginning to match this, and/or offer 200 hours for 200 pesos. A couple years
ago I wrote an article for El Financiero where I advised new internet users
(regardless of where they lived) not to sign long-term contracts! If you
continue to look, you'll get a good deal.

That said, here are some unchecked links of sources I found interesting at the
conference.
